The globe Euphorbia obesa from South Africa E.obesa must be the most well known of the here
introduced Euphorbias. Its care instructions can be kept short: just treat it
like a cactus. Opposed to most euphorbias, E.obesa can take winter
temperatures of approximately 6°C, provided it is kept completely dry. |

The plants stay spherical for many years and reach a
diameter of about 10 cm. As age
progresses they will get cylindrical and up to 20 cm tall. E.obesa should be kept in a bright position, but
also full sun does not harm them if the plants get used to it slowly. The first
strong sun rays in spring often cause sun burn. One should be careful and
lightly shade the plants if necessary. As E.obesa is dioecious, you will need a male and a
female plant for successful pollination. The sex can only be determined when
the plants are in flower. Usually acquisition by chance lets you end up with
a collection full of plants of the same sex. A sex change every few years is possible. Propagation from seed is
easy. Propagation by cuttings is impossible as E.obesa does not produce branches
or offsets. |
