Spineless Crown of Thorns

Euphorbia geroldii from Madagascar

Whoever likes Crown of Thorns, will love E.geroldii. Like the latest hybrids, this natural species also flowers the whole year round and with the luminous colour of its cyathophylls it beats most hybrids anyway.

For many perhaps another plus: E.geroldii is missing the usual spines. It will not get stuck in the curtains!

The succulence is not very pronounced in E.geroldii and with its thin branches and many leaves it demands adequate water. To prevent damage, the substrate should never be let to dry out completely.

A semi-shady place on the window sill is ideal. It can’t take full sun too well.

Like all Madagascan euphorbias it should be kept warm in winter (min. 15°C / 60°F) and slightly damp. A few drops of water every few days should be sufficient. During the not very pronounced dormancy the plant does not grow, but it carries on flowering and also keeps most of its leaves. If leaves wither in large quantities or the branches even shrivel up, it needs more water despite the dormancy.

The cyathia are bisexual, but you need two different clones to be able to produce seed through pollination.

Propagation by cuttings is possible but not very easy. Older branches soon get woody and then don’t root so easily anymore. Young shoots often dry out faster than they can produce roots.

Similar in care and equally floriferous is

- E. millii var. tenuispinosa: with spines, forms a caudex
